I call it my “Simple System For Managing A Law Firm Client Property Trust Account That WON’T Make You Feel Like A Schmuck”.
In case you’re not familiar with the term, Schmuck is a Yiddish term I learned from my Grandmother meaning foolish but with a particular connotation that a person could have avoided the problem by asking for instructions. She would often use “schmuck” to describe my Grandfather whenever he would make an avoidable-mistake because he didn’t ask her first how to do it. “Al, you are such a schmuck! Why didn’t you ask me how to tie your shoe? Then it wouldn’t have come un-tied!” (I come from a “colorful” family!)
ANYWAY, I don’t know about YOU, but I felt like a bit of a schmuck when I first started my own law firm. Because despite hearing all the warnings about WHY not to screw-up my IOLTA Client Property Trust Account, the fact was no-one ever bothered to teach me HOW to properly set-up, or manage the damn thing!

This Program Has Been Ten Years In The Making!
It began when I was a Law Practice Management Advisor with The Florida Bar. With the help of my friend & mentor J.R. Phelps who served as the LOMAS Founding Director from 1980 until his retirement last year I “perfected” a technique for teaching lawyers how to setup and manage an IOLTA client property trust account. It was EXACTLY what I wish someone had taught me, back when I was losing sleep and wasting money for lack of education about how to manage my own trust account! That would have saved me A LOT of trouble!!!

UPDATE: I am being inundated with questions! Surprisingly, most of the questions are coming from very experienced lawyers. Even a few law office managers too. And they’re mostly sharing some very personal stories with me about this subject. Which I’ve convinced a few to share publicly here on this site so everyone else with a similar experience you can know you’re not alone.
